In almost every Indian Home a lamp is lit daily before the altar of the Lord. In some houses it is lit at dawn, in some twice a day – at dawn and dusk – and in a few it is maintained continuously – Akahanda deepa. All auspicious functions commence with the lighting of the lamp, which is often maintained right through the occasion.

Light symbolizes knowledge and darkness – ignorance. The lord is the knowledge principal who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Hence light is worshiped as the lord himself.

Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Also knowledge is a lasting inner wealth by which all outer achievement can be accomplished. Hence we light the lamp to bow down to knowledge as the greater of all forms of wealth.

Why not light a bulb or tube light? That too would remove darkness. But the traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vaasanas or negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards. Similarly we should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher ideals.

While lighting the lamp during the Virtual Puja time we can say the following slogan:

Deepajothi parabrahma

deepa sarva tamopahaha

deepena saadhyate saram

sandhyaa deepo namostute

I prostrate to the dawn/dusk; whose light is the knowledge principle (the supreme lord), which removes the darkness of ignorance and by which all can be achieved in life.

Kandha sashit viratham last for six days and it will start on the day that follows the new moon in the month of Aswin and this is very important for Lord Murugan Devotees. The sixth day of full moon day and sixth day of new moon day are the favorite days of Lord Murugan. Some murugan devotees observe fasting on these days and throughout the kanda sashti period. The sashit falling in the waxing moon period in the Hindu lunar month of Aippasi is the day on which lord murugan killed a super demon surapadman. This battle is re-acted every year on the sixth of kanda sashti as a symbol of destruction of evil by god. Each of these six days is custom made by reciting the glory of lord murugan from one of his six scriptures like Tirumurukarruppadai, Kandar Kalivenba, Kandar Anubhuti, Kandar Alankaram, Kanda Sashti Kavacam and Kanda Puranam.

The origin of this temple is quite fantastic, and it emerged by the divine will communicated to two merchants living in Madras. It begins with two great bhaktas named Kandappa Achari and Mari Chettiar, who lived some three hundred years before in Madras. They were intensely attached to the Kumaran of Tiruporur and were visiting every month regularly on the auspicious Krithika day, walking all the way nearly 60 km. And returning like wise. And they used to rest on the way under a neem tree. One day a snake came and slept near Marri Chetty, when he was in deep sleep. In his dream he was directed by a boy to take the idols hidden under ant-hill and install in a temple. On waking up he found to his shock the snake lying next to him, which disappeared at once.

He informed of this entire event to his friend. Being devout Bhaktas, they dug the ant-hill and found to their surprise beautiful images, of Muruga, Valli and Devasena. They took them home. Kandappa Achari installed them in a temple besides a small shrine built by him for Vinayaka some years before. Due to liberal grant of boons, the Muruga became very popular. This area being dominated by commercial people, they deemed it fit to build an exclusive. big temple for Kandan. So there came up into’ existence this present temple. As this temple is situated in the flower garden, the deity is popularly called Poonganagar Murugan. This Lord gives darsan with Lord Siva on one side and Parvathi on the other. This popular Somaskandar darsan feasts the eyes and fulfills the desires easily. So it attained great fame. All the periodical festivals are celebrated with great pomp and splendour consuming some lakes of rupees. The temple’s Vasantha mandap is used for conducting discourses and also special functions. The temple is largely and liberally endowed by rich merchants, and so owns many valuable jewels, vessels, vahanas etc. It is an much frequented temple in Madras.

This is one of the famous South India Temple. It lies in the Rasappa Chetty Street, one of the busiest parts of Madras, accessible from any point by city bus.

Lord Muruga, also known as Skanda, Subrahmanya, etc is usually offered white or red Arali. Other favorite flowers that can be offered are rose and Champa flowers (Shenbegam).

Arali is also know as Oleander, Kaner in Hindi and Rakatakarabi in Bengali.

But the point to be noted is that Arali flower and plants are considered to be poisonous and is believed to toxic compounds so they have to be handled very carefully.

Golden champa or yellow champa locally known as chambugam or chempaka is another favorite flower of Lord Muruga.

Valli stands for the Iccha Sakti—the Power of Will. And the other, Deivayanai, stands for Kriya Sakti—the Power of Action.

Thus should a Jiva aspiring to Godliness, having brought the will-power under control, strive ceaselessly till it reaches the goal.

Hence the three Saktis, in the form of Vel—Jnana Sakti (knowledge), Valli—Iccha Sakti, and Deivayanai—Kriya Sakti, form part and parcel of Lord Shanmukha, who is also named as Saktidhara.

Glory to the Lord of the Saktis! Glory to the Lord who dispels ignorance amongst the devotees by His Velayudha.( the spear)

A festival occurring in the Tamil month Thai (January – February), on the day of the star Poosam around Pournami (Full Moon) is celebrated as Thaipusam [Thai Poosam]. There are several legends about the festival Thaipusam. Here are a few of them There was a demon named Tharakasuran who gave a lot of trouble to the rishis and saints. Lord Muruga was called by his parents Lord Shiva and Parvati and given the job of destroying the Asuran. Lord Muruga set off with the blessings of his parents to destroy the demon. He took with him twelve weapons, eleven of which were given by his father Lord Shiva and the ‘Vel’ given by his mother Parvati. Lord Muruga destroyed Tharakasuran on the Poosam Nakshatra day in the Tamil month of Thai and hence Thai Poosam is celebrated in all Murugan temples.

According to another legend, as Shiva was imparting a mantra to Parvati, Lord Muruga eavesdropped on them. For that error, Parvati laid a curse on him, in line with the rule that even a son, if erring, must be punished. To be redeemed from her curse, Lord Muruga offered hard penance at Thiruparankundram. Pleased with his penance, Shiva and Parvati appeared before him and lifted the curse. The day on which the curse was removed is Thai Poosam.

It is thus a special day for worship of Lord Muruga or Subrahmanya and is celebrated in a very grand manner at all Murugan temples, especially at the Six Battle Camps or ‘Arupadai Veedu’ of Murugan.
